about

Closer, the second LP from composer / violinist Tobias Preisig, is a collection of detailed vignettes – compositions that have the feel of photos which were taken using multiple exposures. Prismatic and layered. It’s a very intimate work; not only in terms of subject matter, but also in how the violin is played and rendered. It feels as if it was recorded in “macro:" every single sound full of detail and up close. The record is the second part of a conceptual triptych. This time, Preisig decided to explore a very simple question: what does the ordinary sound like? Or, in his own words, “what do you feel when you walk through your neighbourhood over and over again? How would you address that using sound? And, with that, articulate the true worth of something that you could just as easily take for granted.”

The album was written and recorded at a makeshift home studio. As common a thing as that might be these days, the experience was new for Preisig, who had cut all of his records up until this point at official studios. It makes sense, however, that material that specifically deals with the textures of everyday life was created in a familiar, casual environment such as this. If you listen closely, you will hear the sounds of daily life playing out in the background: family and neighbours going about their business. Every piece also features a layer of field recordings. According to Preisig, “these recordings are like the priming on a canvas. You might not be aware of them when you listen, but if I were to mute them, you would immediately feel that something is missing.” The majority of these field recordings were sourced during long walks through the city, which became something of a daily ritual for the composer and an integral part of the compositional process. He continues, “this LP is an intimate report from someone walking through the city. With every one of these trips, you get to know this place better.”

Once the key outlines of the songs were committed to tape, Tobias started to invite friends for one-on-one recording get togethers. These meet ups weren’t motivated just by the music, strictly speaking (it usually took just a few minutes to track, since most of the recording was done on a first-take basis), but by the need for connection and conversation. Alessandro Giannelli, his partner from Egopusher, added drums and percussion to a couple of tracks. James Varghese played electric bass. Jan Wagner, who produced this record and was responsible for architecting its close-mic’d, intimate sound played the Wurlitzer and synths. The warm sound of the Mellotron you hear sprinkled throughout was played by Tobias and Jan interchangeably.

Closer is the most melodic record in Preisig’s catalog to date. It’s free of existential angst and the weight of introspection. It’s light, uncomplicated, and feels connected. It’s a document of someone loving the place in life where they found themselves, literally and figuratively, and taking great pleasure in sharing it with the world.
